1st 5 Fact: The state’s most important source of revenue comes from oil; it produces about one quarter of all oil produced in the US. Other important industries are fisheries, wood and wood products, furs and tourism.
Wild and remote, this state has been nicknamed “The Last Frontier.” When U.S. Secretary of State William Seward bought the land from Russia in 1867, for two cents an acre, it was nicknamed “Seward’s folly.” Then gold was found in its rivers and streams, and it became an economic asset. It finally became a U.S. state in 1959.
This state is one of extremes. It is the largest state in the union, covering 656,425. It has the coldest temperatures in the nation, and the lowest population density.
This state has the largest national forest in the United States, the Tongass National Forest. It also has the country’s highest mountain, Mt. McKinley, which rises 20,320 ft. above sea level. In fact, 17 of the 20 highest peaks in the US are found here.
